Stantec has an opportunity for a Senior Biologist to help lead our wildlife programs. The position will be located in Edmonton, Alberta. Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and contributing to wildlife field programs, components of environmental assessments, management plans, and environmental permitting activities for a variety of projects across Western Canada.
Your Key Responsibilities
Develop, lead, manage and support components of environmental projects, including:
Promoting a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program
Interact and interface with environmental regulators
Assignments/projects are advanced in nature and require the application of mature knowledge as well as an understanding of Federal, Provincial, and Municipal regulations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Responsible for planning and conducting assignments/ projects having broad scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of difficult tasks
Develop, manage, and implement projects related to terrestrial wildlife, such as biophysical impact assessments, environmental assessments, management plans, mitigation plans, regulatory approvals, monitoring etc.
Provide senior technical advisory relating to natural science and biology on multidisciplinary projects
Coordinating and tracking of assignments, scopes, schedules budgets and deliverables
Demonstrating leadership and coordination of staff across operating units
Client management, client communication and business development (i.e., preparing scopes, budgets, presentations etc.)
Technical writing and report preparation
Technical direction to staff/mentoring of junior staff
QA/QC of technical documents
Execution of field surveys across Western Canada
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Demonstrated experience in project development and management of complex field programs
Knowledge of environmental legislation as it relates to Western Canada
Experience preparing environmental assessments/ impact statements and other regulatory applications;
Demonstrated technical writing skills;
Willingness to travel for project work to urban or remote locations across Western Canada
Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/ technical backgrounds including internal and external clients and regulatory agencies; and
Desire to mentor and manage junior and intermediate staff (experience supervising people and/or leading teams is an asset).
Education and Experience
Bachelor or graduate degree in biology, or a related discipline from a recognized university.
Registration with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
Minimum of 10 years’ experience
Previous experience in a consulting environment is an asset
Cross training across multiple wildlife disciplines and/or regions is an asset
Vegetation assessment skills are also an asset (i.e., identification and classification, wetland delineation and assessment, rare plants etc.)
