SEASONAL PLANT BREEDING RESEARCH ASSISTANT

We have state-of-the-art potato processing plants in Prince Edward Island, Lethbridge, Alberta, and Jamestown, North Dakota, and an appetizer plant in Wheatley, Ontario. Cavendish Farms is looking for a Seasonal Plant Breeding / Research Assistant for a period of up to 6 months. The successful candidate is detail oriented, disciplined on the execution of tasks, very organized and with ability to quickly adapt to a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Collect and analyze phenotypic data in the field, laboratory and greenhouse to support plant breeding efforts.
Assists with routine plant breeding program functions, including planting and transplanting, crossing/pollination, collection of pollen, harvesting of fruit samples, seed extraction, proper storage of seeds and tubers and control of breeding material inventory.
Assists in the design and execution of trials in the greenhouse and field test plots.
Assists with the propagation of Parental lines in the greenhouse.
Operates and maintain computer and lab equipment.
Support breeding and research field work including seed preparation, planting, roguing, harvest and grading.
Responsible for maintenance of plants in the greenhouse, including planting, watering and harvesting potatoes;
All other duties as assigned.
Successful Candidate will possess the following qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred;
Must hold a valid driver's license;
Willingness to work outdoors;
Willingness to work extended hours including weekends.
Experience around equipment would be an asset;
Effective communication skills;
High degree of attention to detail and critical thinking;
Demonstrated technical skills;
Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.
